Frequently Asked Questions
How does the laser work?
This patented second generation laser is specially designed to shine through your
toe and destroy the specific fungal pathogens embedded in and under your nail causing
the infection and promote new nail growth. The laser operates in the very close
spectrum of near infrared light. Unlike CO2 lasers of the past, this laser safely
destroys the fungi, molds and bacteria that often cause Onychomycosis. This new
treatment is the use of low-level lasers to treat toenail fungus. These lasers work
by shining a special light through the toenail and it’s root, or matrix, disrupting
the structure of the fungus while leaving the skin and surrounding tissue unharmed.
The laser light treats all aspects of the fungal condition, including the nail plate,
the nail bed and the nail matrix, the area from which the nail grows.
Is this laser painful?
The gentle laser light beam has no effect on healthy tissue. There is no discomfort
associated with the treatment during or after. This treatment does not harm or affect
your activity in any way. You will be able to walk out of the office pain free.
Does it really work?
Preliminary results have demonstrated better than 85% success rate, growing a normal
looking nail, from just one treatment. After the one treatment, the nail plate should
grow out normally in 6-9 months if there is a healthy nail bed. This result is better
than the results reported for the oral pill, Lamisil, which you take for three months
with potential risks of side effects, including liver toxicity.
Is this treatment safe?
There are no age or health restrictions or limitations. In clinical studies there
have been no adverse reactions, injuries, disabilities or known side effects. As
you may know, the oral medications now used to treat this infection must be taken
daily for many months and carry with them some risk of systemic involvement or side
effects that can affect the liver, kidneys, and skin. This new laser treatment is
an all at once, one-time treatment.
Does my insurance pay for this?
Because this treatment is considered aesthetic, health insurance plans do not cover
this treatment. We accept major credit cards, cash or you may use your Flexible
Spending Account or Health Savings Account. Gift Certificates are available. Please
call us to reserve a gift certificate or obtain a consultation at 214-618-3750.
How much does it cost?
Similar treatments around the country vary in price from $800 to $1,200. Our office
laser fungus treatment fee is $750*. The treatment price includes any necessary nail
preparation or filing, two laser treatments one week apart, and our post treatment
evaluation and counseling at six months post-treatment. We have obtained the best
results when the laser treatment is applied to all of the toenails on both feet,
even the ones that appear uninfected, two times. This creates an environment free
of nail fungus and reduces the chance of reinfection. Each laser treatment takes
about 30 minutes. If the infection is resistant or the nails have not responded
with normal growth, the nails may require additional laser treatments. If an additional
treatment is desired within the first 12 months, that price is discounted to $450*.
